Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church began during the days of slavery before any permanent place of worship was built.
There was not a regular pastor until the close of the Civil War in 1865. Trustees, who were also Deacons, were: William Harris, Billie Boss, Oscar Parker, Sr., Isaac Vann, Sr., and Rev. Henry Parker who was a licensed minister and assistant pastor.
In 1865, the Rev. Sandy Cook was elected pastor and a small frame building was built on Cedar Street in front of the present structure.
Through the years our facilities have continued to be improved and our holdings expanded. In 1989 a $200,000 structure was added and furnished.
Our church is a member of the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina and contributes generously to the work of that body. We also have three active Missionary Circles and support the work of Foreign Mission through the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Missionary Convention.
Our church has grown both spiritually and physically; and since the very beginning we have had an active part in building the work of the Kingdom. We, the members, look forward to even greater work in the future.
In 2003,
Rev. Curtis O. Donald, Sr. was selected by the membership and sent by the Lord. He came to Mt. Zion by way of Potts Camp, Mississippi. In addition to the spritual and numerical growth that we are experiencing under the leadership of our new pastor, others in our surrounding communities and cities are being touched by his enthusiastic and enlightening preaching and teaching ministry. Pastor Donald's easy going style draws people to him, and in short order he is being given opportunities to minister and serve in both our local and state conventions. At present he is serving as Vice President of the Eastern District Union and a new member of both the Old Eastern Baptist Association Executive Board as well as an At-Large Member of the General Board of the GBSC of North Carolina.
