Historical Facts About Haiti
Right or wrong, Haiti is considered the point of entry of Christianity into the New World because it is the place where Christopher Columbus built the first Spanish colony after landing on December 5th, 1492. Roman Catholicism was the official religion of Spain, and thus was imposed on all the original inhabitants of the island. The natives were made Christians by force and the island was called 'Hispaniola', meaning 'little Spain'. Before long the Indian population was enslaved and wiped out, and Africans were imported as replacements. But that's not all.
Haiti is the only place in the world where revolutionary African slaves successfully ended slavery and colonialism to build a new and independent country. All this happened when Jean-Jacques Dessalines, his Generals, along with the indigenous army, proclaimed Haiti's independence from France on January 1st, 1804. On that day, they rejected the colonial name 'Saint-Domingue' and reclaimed the Indian name Haiti (Ayiti) for the country.
In celebration of Haiti's bicentenary, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2004 the 'International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition.

Welcome
We are a body of believers committed to worshipping and serving Jesus Christ as we become a REAL CHURCH. As a Missionary Baptist Church, we willingly partner with like-minded Christians. We hope that our site gives you insight into just who we are. More than anything else; we want to be like Jesus.
Christ reached out to people of all ages and backgrounds and at our church we desire to do the same. That is why you will discover that here we have ministries that are geared to various life stages and needs. Mt. Zion is a place for everyone to study the Scriptures, fellowship together, and provide effective ministry to each individual.
We want you to be a part of the blessings of God in the life of our church. We will bring you updates often on just what is happening at our church and share the stories of how Christ is making a difference in the lives of our family.

Heaven Will Help Haiti Through Us
|
Dear Family,
As I sit in my comfortable chair this afternoon, and reflect on the grace and mercy of God, I can not help but to really want to rush across the hall and into the sanctuary and really tell God thank you. In fact, I think I will!
My family slept comfortably and securely last night and this morning everyone had food to eat. In fact, we had choices. We made choices concerning what to eat, what to wear, and even which shoes to put on our feet. But even as I type, I am keenly aware that in Haiti, there are thousands who are not as fortunate.
For the past several days, I can't seem to get Haiti out of my mind. We are such a blessed nation. Watching the details of the devastation on the news all day everyday is almost overwhelming. The casualties are staggering and yet there are those in Haiti who have found reasons to sing and dance.
This tragedy has caused me to question not only my purpose in life, but the purpose of churches in our community. Why are we here? What do we do for others outside of our church doors? I'm wondering how or if any of the local churches will respond to help out in this terrible event. We certainly cannot turn our backs and say "It's not my problem. Let someone else do it."
On this coming Sunday, I plan to speak to our church officials about ways in which we can help. Additionally, as president of the Eastern District Union and The Tri City Ministerial Alliance, I will make an appeal to our churches. I am aware that some of the larger churches in our area have the means to send medical teams, supplies, and volunteers, while others do not have as many resources.
However, I am certain that all of us can do something. Instead of constantly dialoging about what we can not do, I suggest that we who love God make an effort to change the mindsets of our people about our real mission, about God and about humanity. If we do that, we just might truly become REAL CHURCHES.
Now there's a thought.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, because you love one another. John 13:35
